A Wicomico County Circuit Court jury has found a 21-year-old Delmar man charged with allegedly killing thousands of chickens on a farm in Delmar last August, guilty on one of five charges stemming from last year’s incident. That means Joshua Shelton will spend 60 days in jail; the Judge actually sentenced him to two years behind bars with all but 60-days suspended for 4th degree burglary.
Shelton allegedly was drunk when he stumbled onto Mark Shockley’s East Line Road farm August 25, 2012 and turned off the power to his chicken houses; the move deprived the flock of food, water and cooling fans; initially Shockley claimed that 70,000 chickens had died. Yesterday in Court, he told the judge that 34,000 chickens perished.
The judge also ordered Shelton to spend three years on probation; he has to attend drug and alcohol counseling and he has to repay Shockley more than $5,000 in restitution for the dead chickens.
