Today marks the last full week for taxpayers to fill out and send in their federal income tax returns before the April 15 filing deadline. The IRS highly recommends e-filing returns so you can get refunds faster. In addition to brand-name tax preparation software, one of the places where you can e-file is the IRS' website, IRS.gov. That feature is available to taxpayers of all income levels.
IRS.gov also has several features that can help with last-minute questions for taxpayers as they fill out their 1040 forms. Regional spokeswoman Dianne Besunder says if you haven't already, now is the time to gather all your documents, such as receipts, checks and expense reports to fill out the form. You'll need to report all your income on your tax return, including your wages listed on W-2 forms, and dividend income from stocks and bonds on Form 1099.
For people who prefer to mail in their returns, post offices will be open late next Monday night, the 15th.
