A Harrington man is being treated at Kent General Hospital in Dover after crashing his pickup truck while leading Delaware State Police on a high-speed chase from Lewes to Ellendale early this morning.
Troopers say around 1:10 this morning, a trooper was traveling south on Route 1 approaching Dartmouth Drive when he was nearly hit head-on by a Doge Ram that was driving the wrong way. Another trooper found the truck still going north in the southbound lanes near the Nassau Bridge. When the trooper turned on the lights and siren, the driver, identified as 25-year-old Joseph Watkins, sped off. Officers from the Milton Police and DATE joined the chase, which crossed several county roads and through the town of Lincoln. Watkins led police south on South Old State Road, across Route 16 and across Route 113, where he crashed into some trees off the southbound lanes.
Watkins had to be extricated from his truck, and was taken to Milford Memorial Hospital, and then transferred to Kent General. His condition isn't known at this time. Troopers believe alcohol was a factor, and charges against Watkins are pending.
