A state initiative to get kids outdoors has been honored with a recreational group’s award.

The Governor’s Children in Nature Initiative has won the Delaware Recreation and Parks Society’s 2013 Friends of Recreation Award.  The initiative is a collaboration between DNREC and the Delaware Department of Education. The departments worked with private and nonprofit partners on a taskforce to address concerns about the lack of time children have to learn and play outdoors.

The award is presented to a person or organization that makes important contributions towards the advancement and development of parks, open space, recreational or cultural programs and sites in Delaware.
