Sen. Pettyjohn Comments On Gun Legislation Announced By Governor

Feb 23, 2013 -- 5:21am

State Senator Brian Pettyjohn says legislation that would require gun owners to notify police whenever their firearms are lost or stolen could turn law-abiding victims into criminals and does nothing to address the problem of criminals obtaining firearms.

The bill, announced Wednesday by Gov. Jack Markell and Attorney General Beau Biden, would require owners of lost or stolen firearms to report such loss or theft to local or state police within 48 hours of discovery. As part of the bill, violators would be subject to a fine of $100 to $500 for a first offense. Second and subsequent offenses would be class G felonies.

Senator pettyjon says while he fully encourages and supports the intent of the bill, which is promoting the prompt reporting of a lost or stolen firearm but we don’t need this bill to do that; he says every law-abiding citizen he knows would do so as a matter of course and they certainly do not need the State of Delaware coercing them to do so.
