Delaware high school students who qualify for a SEED or Inspire scholarship to attend college but also want to enlist in the military will be able to do both under legislation being drafted by House Majority Whip Representative John Viola.
The Student Excellence Equals Degree program provides scholarships for Delaware high school students to attend Delaware Technical & Community College or University of Delaware to obtain an associate’s degree.
Inspire scholarship recipients receive funding to attend Delaware State University. However, the scholarships’ rules require students to enroll in the program for the fall semester immediately following their spring graduation, not allowing any deferral.
Rep. Viola’s draft legislation would enable students to enlist in the National Guard or military reserves and complete basic training before enrolling in the scholarship program.
