Longtime HS Wrestling Coach Herman Bastianelli Dies; Will Be Remembered Monday At Georgetown MS

A longtime high school wrestling coach in Sussex County has died.

Herman Bastianelli died on Thursday. He started the wrestling program at Georgetown High School, which is now Sussex Central, and also coached cross country. His Georgetown High wrestling teams went undefeated from 1961 to 1969, and won 56 straight dual meets. He finished his coaching career in wrestling with a record of 150-15. He coached the Sussex Central cross country team to the state championship in 1980. Bastianelli is a 2000 inductee of the Delaware Wrestling Hall of Fame, and a 2003 inductee of the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame.

Bastianelli will be remembered during a service at 2 o’clock Monday afternoon in the Georgetown Middle School Auditorium. Instead of flowers, his family is asking that donations be made in his memory to Delaware Hospice.
