BREAKING & UPDATED: 3 Dead, 2 Wounded in Shooting at New Castle County Courthouse in Wilmington

5pm - Three people are dead after a gunman went into the New Castle County Courthouse lobby this morning and began shooting.  Police have not released the name of the dead - which includes the gunman.  It was believed the gunman was the ex-husband of one of the victims, but a law enforcement officer says he is not the gunman, although his name was on the sign-in log for a child support hearing. 

Numerous state, local and federall police agencies are working together to investigate the incident which also left two Capitol Police officers injured.  The New Castle County Courthouse will remain closed Tuesday so that repairs can be made to the facility, and it's expected to reopen on Wednesday.  All other courthouses will open as usual. 

Because of today's shooting, Governor Jack Markell is cutting his trade mission to India short and is returning to Delaware.

3:30pm - During a press conference in Wilmington after this morning's shooting incident at the New Castle County Courthouse.  Officials are not releasing the name of the victims or the shooter and a law enforcement officer who initially named the shooter as David Matusiewicz, now says that while his name was on a  court sign-in log for a child support hearing, he is not the shooter.  However Attorney General Beau Biden says the incident is tied to a custody dispute that has been in the state court system for several years. 

Two women and the gunman were killed and two Capitol Police officers were injured.  Police are asking anyone who witnessed the shooting - and left the courthouse before speaking to police to call them at 302-834-2620, extension 0.  For anyone who needs to speak with someone, the STate Police Victim Center is 1-800-VICTIM 1 or 1-800-842-8461.

1pm - A lockdown of schools in the vicinity of the New Castle County Courthouse has been lifted by the Christina School District after a lone gunman entered the Courthouse lobby and began shooting. State Police say two women and the gunman are dead, 2 Capitol POlice officers were wounded - saved by wearing their Kevlar vests. 

FOX News in Philadelphia has unofficially identified as 45 year old David Matusiewicz, formerly of Middletown, who was sentenced to 48 months in prison and 5 years of supervised release in 2009 after pleading guilty to a single count each of bank fraud and international parental kidnapping. In 2007, Matusiewicz obtained a $249,000 home equity line of credit from WSFS Bank and forged his ex-wife's signature to the documents and transferred the funds to a bank in New Zealand.  Then he kidnapped his 3 children who traveled with Matusiewicz in a mobile home from the US to Nicaragua where they were found 19-months later.  Matusiewicz was arrested in March of 2009 and the children reuninted with their mother.

10:55 a.m.:  Delaware State Police say two women were shot to death when a gunman opened fire at the New Castle County Courthouse this morning.

Police Sergeant Paul Shavack says the shooter is dead, and two male Capitol Police officers were wounded; their conditions are non-life threatening. Police say one of the women killed was the shooter’s wife.

It is NOT yet clear whether the shooter was killed by Capitol Police officers or if he took his own life.

Police say the incident began around 8 a.m. when the gunman was stopped by Capitol Police at a security checkpoint inside the front door; multiple shots were fired.

Gov Jack Markell statement on courthouse shooting: "Our thoughts and prayers right now are with the victims of this senseless violence."

10:20 a.m.:  Two women, including the gunman’s wife, and the gunman are dead following a shooting at the New Castle County Courthouse this morning.

Police say the gunman entered the New Castle County Courthouse around 8 o’clock this morning and opened fire, killing his wife and another woman and injuring two Capitol Police officers before being killed himself.

Meantime, the Courthouse is on lockdown and streets surrounding the Courthouse are closed to traffic.

Six nearby schools are also on lockdown as a precautionary measure.

The victims were taken to Christiana Hospital; again, the shooters wife is dead; we do NOT know the conditions of the other two victims.

To reiterate, police say the gunman is confirmed dead.

Meantime, the Courthouse is on lockdown and streets surrounding the Courthouse are closed to traffic.

There is also a school right around the corner from the Courthouse; that school has been put on lockdown as a precautionary measure.

9:15 a.m.: Wilmington Police say two women and a man were shot at the New Castle County Courthouse on King Street in Wilmington this morning around 8 o'clock. We do NOT know right now what condition those victims are in; they were taken to Christiana Hospital. Earlier reports indicated five people shot and one dead.

Details are conflicting and Delaware State Police are now on the scene.

The lone gunman has been confirmed dead. 

The Courthouse is on lockdown.

The shooting occurred in the lobby.

9 a.m.:  We have now confirmed that police have a person in custody following a shooting this morning inside the New Castle County Court of Common Pleas at the New Castle County Courthouse on King Street.

Unconfirmed reports say one person is dead and five others are wounded.

Police and medics are on the scene; workers are being evacuated from the building.

8:35 a.m.: WGMD News has confirmed that shots have been fired in the New Castle County Court of Common Pleas at the New Castle County Courthouse on King Street in Wilmington.

Reports coming out of Wilmington say some courthouse workers are hiding in their offices; reports of a lone gunman in the lobby area.

Police and medics are on the scene.
